Uber to Offer Drivers ‘Vocational Training’ Once Self-Driving Cars Takeover

Uber Plans ‘Vocational Training’ For Drivers Once Cars Go Autonomous

As the tech and auto community starts to shift focus to self-driving cars, a new dilemma is building up - especially for companies like Uber. Once autonomous cars hit the road in large numbers, Uber drivers will possibly lose their jobs. With this in mind, the company is planning to train its drivers in order to equip them with skills that they can rely on post-driving.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick told the CODE conference in 2014, "When there's no other dude in the car, the cost of Uber becomes cheaper than owning a vehicle."

According to Start Up Smart, when Kalanick was asked how he will break this news to Uber drivers, he responded, "I would say to them, this is the way the world is going."

Those statements are from 2014. Recently, its seems that the Uber CEO might have had a change of heart when it comes to the fate of the company's drivers once autonomous cars start hitting the road. Now, Kalanick is suggesting other easy ideas to assist Uber drivers.

First, Kalanick has hinted that the company might transition from contracting human drivers to creating routes for autonomous vehicles. He said that Uber is planning to implement vocational training for its drivers in order to train them in new technologies.

Kalanick hinted at these possibilities during the Summit At Sea getaway conference. Before highlighting his future plans, Kalanick noted that 30,000 people die annually due to car accidents. He made cleaar his stance towards automated cars as the solution to avoid traffic congestion and accidents.

According to Tech Crunch, Kalanick said, "Do we want to embrace the future and embrace the technology, or resist it?" He then pointed Uber's optimistic role in the future of the self-driving car industry saying that the company will "optimistically lead through it."
