Mohammed Emwazi, Jihadi John's biological name, made his appearance through videos, which execution and beheading of hostages took place.
27-year-old Emwazi was born in Kuwait and is a naturalized British citizen.
David Cameron, United Kingdom's British Prime Minister, stated that targeting Jihadi John was "the right thing to do" and these strikes were an "act of self-defense."
"We have been literally working, with the United States, literally around the clock to track him down," said Cameron.
Cameron added that this move was a combined effort of both the United States and the United Kingdom. The contributions of the two countries was essential to bring down the barbaric murderer.
The United States military used a Reaper drone that was armed with Hellfire missiles to initiate an attack on a vehicle that Emwazi and another militant were traveling in.
"We think we got him," said the senior official in an interview. The senior official, who spoke to the press on the condition of anonymity, did not disclose further details.
A final confirmation whether the drone strike killed Emwazi will take days to be completed.
John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, stated that the overall outcome of the airstrike was still unknown. Nonetheless, he noted that this move should also serve as a caution to the other Islamic State militants.
"There is no future, no outward path forward for Daesh, which does not ultimately to its elimination, to its destruction," said Kerry.
Daesh is an Arabic acronym for the Islamic State.
Britain is not officially taking part in the military offense in Syria as their Parliament rejected an intervention two years ago.
However, Britain and France render their participation, led by the United States air campaign against Islamic State targets.
