Facebook Tests New Break-Up Tools for Ex-Lovers

Social networking giant Facebook announced on Thursday that it is experimenting with a new kind of tool that will help people to cope with complicated relationships. The Menlo Park-based company said that the new tool is designed to give users the option to digitally distance themselves from their lovers.

The new tool is still in development and Facebook said that it will release it in due time. The company added that once the new tool is released, it will prompt users to use it when they change their relationship status.

If users opt to use the new tool, they will be given an option to "see less" from a specific person, which in this case will be their former lover. The option works two ways as the other person will also receive less news or notification from the user who opted to use the tool.

The new tool will also allow users to make changes to their past photos and posts.

According to Tech Crunch, the idea of the tool is to provide space between two ex-lovers in the digital world.

The new tool will allow users to tell Facebook that they want to see less of the specific person. This means that the person's posts and notifications will not appear on the users News Feed. Users who will use this new tool will not be prompted by auto-suggestions to message or tag the people they ban in photos.

The good thing about this new feature is that the other person will not be notified of the changes that the user has made. This eliminates the awkward situation when users find out that they have been blocked or unfriended by another user.

Facebook said that aside from banning posts from News Feed, the new tool will also limit the amount of information the banned person can access on the user's profile.

Facebook product manager Kelly Winters told BBC, "We hope these tools will help people end relationships on Facebook with greater ease, comfort and sense of control."
