"Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash" is the newest video game title to be added to the "Mario Tennis" franchise. The new game was developed by Camelot Software Planning and released in November exclusively for the Wii U console.
Fans of the "Mario Tennis" video game series will love this new game since it retains several familiar gameplay elements from its two predecessors; "Mario Power Tennis" and "Mario Tennis Open." Among the new additions to the game are the Jump Shots and the Mega Battles.

"Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash" can be downloaded directly on the Nintendo eShop. The game requires 888MB of storage space.
Video game critics were somewhat divided in their reviews of the game. Some critics frowned at the lack of new features and gameplay modes in the new "Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash." Others praised the game's excellent effect and colorful characters. Pundits say that the game will definitely appeal to hardcore "Mario" fans, but the limited gameplay options might steer newcomers away.
According to Venture Beat, one of the new feature added to "Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash" is the random appearance of mushrooms. Gameplay characters grow in size when they acquire these mushrooms. Despite the novel addition, some critics claim that the oversized characters are more of an annoyance rather than an improvement to the game.
Critics were also disappointed about the lack of unique character skills or attributes. According to IGN, there are 16 playable character to choose from. Unfortunately, each character has the same set of skills. While this creates a sense of balance to the overall gameplay, it also limits the options of players.
"Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash" does not support online challenges, tournament and campaign modes. Critics agree that the only saving grace of the game is its excellent character design and graphics.
