Google Street View Adds Ancient City Of Petra in Jordan to List of Landmarks

(Photo : Getty Images) The 3rd century city of Petra in Jordan has been added to Google Street View along with other sites in the country.

The Google Street View team has been capturing images of some of the world's most beautiful and historic sites; from the tallest mountaintops to the deep sea floor. As part of its vision to create a digital version of the world that can be accessible through handheld devices, Google Street View announced on Monday that it is adding more than 30 historic sites to its landmarks.

These sites are located geographically in Jordan and includes the ancient city of Petra, which has been described as a lost third-century city. Petra has been designated as a world heritage site and one of the New seven Wonders of the world by the United Nations Economic, Social and Cultural Organization.

Google's unselfish effort to digitally preserve some of the most historic sites in the world has raised the awareness of some important sites across in the world. The Queen Rania of Jordan penned the company's official blog post about the ancient city of Petra.

Google reportedly approached the queen to help the company since she is known as an advocate of tourism in Jordan. The queen is also active on social media. In fact, she is the first recipient of Google's YouTube visionary award.

The Queen reportedly saw the Google project as an opportunity to counter the overwhelmingly negative notion about the region. In a statement sent to the Washington Post, Queen Rania said, "Unfortunately, we are in a middle of a tough and turbulent neighborhood. News from the region these days is rarely encouraging; tourism has been one of terrorism's many victims. But there is so much more to the Middle East than headlines of horror."

The Queen added that the Middle East is rich with history, culture and heritage.

Google Street View program manager Deanna Yick said that the images form the ancient city of Petra in Jordan will be available on both desktop and mobile. She added that the images will also work on Google Cardboard.
