‘Creed’,‘The Good Dinosaur’ Make Pre-Thanksgiving Surprise in US Box Office, 'Hunger Games: Mockingjay 2' Remains Movie to Beat

'Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2' Continues to Wow Fans

As expected, Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 stays on top of the box-office a day before Thanksgiving. But what was not expected was for Creed to do so well. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Creed earned an estimate of $7.5 million on Wednesday, Nov. 25, alone. This is expected to reach $40 million in five days, in time for the box-office listing.

Creed is the seventh sequel to Rocky, the movie that made Sylvester Stallone a star. Michael B. Jordan stars as a troubled orphan in the movie. He is the illegitimate child of Apollo Creed, whom Rocky met on the ring in 1976. In this movie, Rocky trains his former opponent's child. Critics have raved about Creed, which may have helped its box-office success.

"Like Rocky, a smash that spawned 1,000 sequels (or so it seems), Creed mingles go-for-broke romance with bloody pugilist thrills-but instead of feeling like a rehash, it works like gangbusters," reads a review from Time magazine.

Despite mixed reviews, Pixar's The Good Dinosaur also debuted well. This is the first time Pixar released two movies in a year, following the successful Inside Out. Costing between $175 and $200 million to produce, The Good Dinosaur made $9 million during its debut on Wednesday. It is estimated to make $60 million in five days.

The characters in The Good Dinosaur are voiced by Frances McDormand, Raymond Ochoa, Ana Paquin and Sam Elliott. In its review, the LA Times said:  "In ordinary hands, The Good Dinosaur might not be worth your time. It's got its share of gee-whiz elements and isn't shy about imparting sweet lessons ideal for improving five-year-old minds. But this is Pixar we're talking about, and for those folks doing things the ordinary way is never an option."

Hunger Games: Mockingjay 2, however, remains the movie to beat. It was estimated to have made $13 million just on Wednesday alone. Surprisingly, though, of the four movies in the franchise, this earned the least during its opening week.
