"As the Chinese entertainment industry establishes itself as an entertainment powerhouse globally, Viki is uniquely positioned to stream its TV shows and movies to a new audience of fans around the world, as well as the growing Chinese diaspora," said Tammy H. Nam, Viki CEO, in a statement.
Viki also reported that users on their service can now use 20 different language subtitles. The company claims to have about 40 million monthly active users, who watch its licensed film and TV shows.
Viki was founded by Razmig Hovaghimian, Changseong Ho, and Jiwon Moon in the United States in 2007. The company was also backed by LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and a Singapore-based start-up fund headed by Joichi Ito. Later on, the company moved to Singapore in 2008 to take advantage of the country's government subsidies. In 2012, the company was acquired by a Japanese internet service company called Rakuten for the price $200 million.
The video service is growing today with several headquarters which can be found in San Francisco, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo. In September, the company announced that they are getting into the content making business with its first original series called "Dramaworld". The series was shot in both English and Korean.
Viki is not only collaborating with giant phone maker like Xiaomi, they have also made deals with large Chinese producers and content partners such as iCNTV, Sohu, Huace Film & TV Co., Ltd., and others.
