China Mobile and Ericsson Team Up to Foster 5G Technology

China Mobile Ltd. has announced today that they signed a Memorandum of Understanding ("MoU") with Sweden's Ericsson to foster the research and development of various 5G Technology.

These two companies will team up for at least five years to develop the next generation of radio technology as well as 5G initiatives. This agreement is aimed at developing innovative 5G mobile network technologies in order to revolutionize communication technology and information exchange.

China Mobile and Ericsson will be working together to develop 5G radio technology. The two giant companies are expected to create comprehensive 5G infrastructure and trial of narrowband Internet of Technology (NB-IoT) for massive machine-type communication. The goal is to come up with a 5G Air Interface, which according to them will gain a huge impact in 5G networks once the technology is fully commercialized in 2020.

Both companies are also planning to develop the RAN feature because it will help improve the advancement of 5G infrastructures for industrial purposes. They want to standardize 5G technology, which they believe will lead to digitalization of industries and broadband.

China Mobile is the largest mobile operator in the country in terms of subscribers. The company has already implemented 4G networks and 4G+ networks. China Mobile is currently focusing on the Internet+ strategy at this moment because it is believed that it will boost its network performance.  The company has already upgraded China's traditional industrial lines and its business models through the Internet+ program.

Meanwhile, during Ericsson latest Mobility report, the company highlighted the bright prospects of 5G networks. The company reported that by 2021, 5G mobile subscribers will reach up to 150 million users in China, U.S., South Korea and Japan, which is the highest number of 5G subscriptions.

Ericsson is attempting to bring 5G research out of the lab to places where they can operate such as in Northeast Asia, North America and Latin America.
