Authorities caught the driver at a tollbooth near Xiangzhou and safely removed the unsafe vehicle from the road. Cheng reportedly hails from Fuyang city in Anhui province.
He told the officers that he was involved in an accident a few days earlier and was forced to surrender all his money to his crash victim as payment for the damages he caused.
Cheng claimed that he decided to drive the smashed truck to the neighboring province of Henan so that he could use a friend's car repair shop that he often visits in order to save some money on the repairs. In order to make the trip, Cheng bought a motorcycle helmet as a protection and placed a giant plastic sheet all over the truck as covering for his cabin. To be able to navigate and see, he left only a 20 centimeter diameter hole.
As a consideration, Cheng was not arrested but the police issued him a warning and ordered him to take his vehicle off the highway. Police warned that the consequences of a high-speed crash in his already crippled truck could be fatal.
