The body of the victim was flown back to Chicago, U.S. overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday. The coffin took off from Sanglah Hospital at 4.30 pm local time (5:30 am ET) with FBI vehicles as escort, NBC News detailed.
Police Forensic Chief Dudut Rustiyadi said the victim's body was set to fly to Singapore via Korean Air at 1:45 am local time on Wednesday. From there, it will take another flight to O'Hare International Airport in Chicago.
Heather Mack, 19, the daughter of the victim, and Heather's boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, 21, were arrested over the brutal killing. If the two suspects are found guilty of premeditated murder, they could face a death sentence.
Police arrested the suspects in another place in Bali the day after the killing occurred. As of now, the suspects are detained by authorities on the resort island.
Heather Mack and Schaefer were staying with the victim on the island resort when the latter was killed.
According to police, there is strong evidence that the detained suspects committed the crime. They also announced that the FBI sent an agent to Bali to assist in the investigation.
Heather Mack and Schaefer will not be charged until they appear before a judge and the trial begins, in accordance with the Indonesian legal system.
Meanwhile, Heather Mack's lawyer in the U.S. maintained his client's innocence. He said she was assaulted while in detention and that she is also two months pregnant.
