About 50.4 percent of the respondents also claimed that they have registered with online dating websites, with some getting married after finding their match online.

According to psychological counselor Tian Geng, the urge to marry instantly is one of the factors that drive many singles to dating websites.

However, the survey showed that 75.3 percent of the respondents believe that online dating or matchmaking  are not reliable, making them cautious when signing up online.

Among the concerns raised by the respondents are the issues on fraud and scam, the inability of websites to protect the privacy of the their users, and the presence of those who pretend to be seeking love but are promoting restaurants or expensive wines instead.

Another 45 percent of the respondents believe that most online dating or matchmaking websites have taken part in scams while other sites fail to defend the legal rights of registered users.

The survey also made another discovery - more Chinese singles prefer to find a partner using the conventional ways. About 56 percent of the respondents said they are more likely to trust someone introduced to them by friends while 54.8 percent said joining in group activities is a good way to meet people.
