Andre Ward Loses Another Suit vs Promoter

Super middleweight champion Andre Ward might be better off fighting his battles in the ring rather than slugging it out in a court of law.
Ward lost yet again another case against his promoter Dan Goossen on Tuesday as the fighter sought to be released from Goossen Tutor Promotions.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Holly E. Kendig ruled against Ward's appeal which argued that his contract with Goossen violated Section 2855 of the California Labor Code. Kendig also put into consideration the ruling of the California State Athletic Commission about Ward's complaint.

Based on paragraph (a) of Section 2888, it says, "Except as otherwise provided in subdivision (b), a contract to render personal service ... may not be enforced against the employee beyond seven years from the commencement of service under it. Any contract, otherwise valid, to perform or render service of a special, unique, unusual, extraordinary, or intellectual character, which gives it peculiar value and the loss of which cannot be reasonably or adequately compensated in damages in an action at law, may nevertheless be enforced against the person contracting to render the service, for a term not to exceed seven years from the commencement of service under it. If the employee voluntarily continues to serve under it beyond that time, the contract may be referred to as affording a presumptive measure of the compensation."
Ward sued his promoter earlier this month saying that Goossen failed to disclose the information about income from the fights he had been in. His complaint cited the violation of the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act.
Goossen countered by filing a $10 million defamation case against his prized fighter for the damages.
The 30-year-old champion last fought in the ring on November 16, 2013 when he had unanimous decision win against Edwin Rodriguez in Ontario, California.
Ward is ranked 2nd in the list of best pound-for-pound boxers in the world before Floyd Mayweather Jr. He was the last American to win a gold medal in boxing. He achieved that honor when he competed at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.
