LeTV was recently rebranded as LeEco (short for Le Ecosystem). The move was announced last week Thursday along with the confirmation for the launch of its midrange devices such as Le 1s and the flagship-spec Le Max in the region. According to the company, the Le 1s smartphone is set to be launched on Feb. 2, while the Le Max Pro will debut two weeks later on Feb. 16.
LeTV is one of China's largest Internet business providers and has several firms in e-commerce, hardware manufacturing, smart devices, film and television, and car-tech. The company is the latest Chinese company to set up a branch in India, following the footsteps of Huawei and Xiaomi. Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi began manufacturing its devices in the country in August last year, while Huawei has been manufacturing and selling handsets there for years now.
While China is considered the world's largest smartphone market, its growth is quickly stunting. Meanwhile, India is still on its way to a boom period, with a smartphone penetration of only around 18 percent.
The Le Max Pro, which features a massive 6.33-inch Quad HD display screen, is powered by Snapdragon's new Octa-Core 820 64-bit processor. The device will be available for the price of 32,999 rupees ($500). The Le 1s handset, on the other hand, is less expensive as it features a 1,080x1,290-pixel full HD 5.5-inch screen and a 2.2 GHz MediaTek Helio X10 processor. It will be retail for the price at 10,999 rupees ($165).
LeTV has also announced that it will be opening a large research and development centre in Bangalore to oversee development of India-specific offerings.
