A week ago, Zhang, who is currently ranked world No. 133, secured a ticket to her fifth consecutive Australian Open appearance after beating veteran Virginie Razzano of France.
In the Opening round of the tennis competition, the Chinese qualifier enjoyed a stunning upset victory against the current world No. 2 Simona Halep of Romania. Zhang backed up her first round triumph with a couple of upset wins.
In the second round of the majors, the native of Tianjin outclassed world No. 33 Alize Cornet of France 6-3, 6-3. World No. 51 Varvara Lepchenco of the United States yielded to Zhang 6-1, 6-3 in the third round of the prestigious tennis event.
Zhang is the fourth Chinese player ever to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal after Li Na, Zheng Jie and Peng Shuai. Li was the most successful of the group, picking up two career Grand Slam titles.
Zhang is also guaranteed to become the new Chinese No.1 after this tournament. She is currently China's No.4 after No.83 Zheng Saisai, No.102 Wang Qiang and No.117 Duan Ying-Ying.
Zhang's victory over Keys was just her fourth Grand Slam win in 15 appearances.
Zhang had been thinking of retiring from the sport last year after being 0-14 in her previous Grand Slam matches.
The Chinese tennis player will next face British No. 1 Johanna Konta, who has also made history by becoming the first British woman to reach Grand Slam quarterfinals since 1984.
