The Mavericks are reportedly preparing an offer to snag Brooklyn Nets shooting guard Joe Johnson before this year's NBA trade deadline as Dallas is planning to "add some size to their back court", recent reports say.

Inquisitr reported the rumor and it was also said that aside from Johnson, the Mavs are also considering the Minnesota Timberwolves' Kevin Martin as a potential acquisition as well.

The report also mentioned that since Dirk Nowitzki "is coming close to retirement", Dallas wanted to make sure that their prized 18-year veteran will close his career contending for the NBA championship and so team owner Mark Cuban "has been fully committed to stacking up the roster as much as he can".

If the speculation is true and if the Mavs will be able to get Johnson, then it would be a reunion of sorts for the seven-time All-Star and his former backcourt partner in Brooklyn, Deron Williams, whose combined salaries during their time together made them one of the highest paid backcourts in league history.

Dallas currently has Williams and Wesley Matthews as their starting guards, but Williams had been injury-plagued as of late while Matthews is just coming off an Achilles injury so they have not blended well together so far for head coach Rick Carlisle.

Johnson is noticeably bigger than Matthews, a more reliable scorer, more experienced, and could also play the no. 3 or 4 spots in small-ball lineups.

However, the 15-year pro is on a decline as of the moment, averaging 11.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 4.1 assists in a little over 34 minutes a night in 53 games so far this season. His current numbers are all career-lows since his sophomore season with the Phoenix Suns in 2002-2003.

Meanwhile, Fox Sports indicated that Johnson is not requesting a trade, but is entertaining the idea of a buyout instead.

"I'm a professional, man," Johnson told reporters during one of the Nets' practice session. "Obviously this late in my career this isn't the ideal situation. Obviously."

"But I'm not forcing anything, I haven't went to management and asked for anything. I come to work day in and day out to compete and have fun, that's what it's about. And whatever happens, happens," he added.

Johnson is in the finaly year of the six-year, $123.7 million contract he signed with the Atlanta Hawks during the 2010-2011 season. Brooklyn owes him almost $25 million this year as he is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
