NBA News: Detroit Pistons Retires Chauncey Billups' No. 1 Jersey After Colorful Career

Five-time NBA All-Star Chauncey Ray Billups' No.1 jersey will sway over the Palace of Auburn Hills rafters for a long time to come.

The three-time NBA champions Detroit Pistons announced on Tuesday that Billups' jersey will be retired on Wednesday before the Piston's game against the visiting Denver Nuggets.

Billups started his NBA career as a journeyman, fitting in four different clubs in the first five season of his 17 professional basketball career in the league.

He was the 1997 NBA draft 3rd overall pick selected by the Boston Celtics. But after playing 51 games with the Celtics, he was traded to the Toronto Raptors. His stint with the Raptors did not last long, he was again traded to other teams.

He played for the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves before eventually finding a home in Detroit in June 2002.

During his stint with the Pistons, Billups averaged 16.5 points, 6.2 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game in his eight-plus seasons with Detroit.

In the 2004 NBA Finals, the former University of Colorado Buffaloes hotshot helped the Pistons to win the third NBA championship of the franchise against the powerhouse Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal-led Los Angeles Lakers, four games to one.

Billups averaged 21 points, 3.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game during the series to claim the NBA Finals MVP Award. 

After being successful with Detroit, Billups was again traded in 2008 to the Denver Nuggets for Allen Iverson. Billups made his return to Denver as he helped the Nuggets reach the playoffs.

Billups averaged 16.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 5.3 rebounds, 1.0 assist in 32.3 minutes per game in the 51 games he played during the 2010-11 season with the Nuggets.

He was later on traded to New York Knicks and to the Los Angeles Clippers before returning back to Detroit on July 2013.
