The MediaTek Helio P20 is an octa-core system-on-chip that does not use the big LITTLE configuration and instead takes advantage of eight ARM Cortex A53 cores, each clocked at 2.3GHz.
In terms of graphical power, the Helio P20 has a high-end Mali T880 graphics processing unit clocked at 900MHz.
One important feature of the Helio P20 is the the support for Cat. 6 LTE modem which supports up to 2x20 carrier aggregation with speeds of up to 300Mbps for download and 50Mbps for upload. The chipset also supports Dual-SIM configuration with Dual Standby support.
MediaTek claims that the Helio P20 is the first system-on-chip to support low-power double data rate random access memory (LPDDR4X). This technology essentially lowers the memory voltage from 1.1V to just 0.6V. Just like the Helio X20, the Helio P20 uses the Imagiq Image Signal processor.
Additionally, with LPDDR4X, the chipset can provide up to 70 percent more bandwidth and 50 percent more efficiency, compared to the LPDDR3.
MediaTek was able to cram all these new technologies into the Helio P20 by moving to a 16-FinFET+ manufacturing process. In comparison, the Helio P10 was manufactured using the 28-nanometer process.
With all these new features, MediaTek claims that the Helio P20 will be 25 percent more power efficient as well as 20 percent faster compared to the Helio P10 in terms of processor speed. In terms of graphical power, the Helio P20 will be around 25 percent better compared to its direct predecessor.
MediaTek will begin shipping the Helio P20 sometime in the second half of 2016.
