The sequel was directed by Yuen Woo Ping and takes place 18 years after the conclusion of the first movie.
The plot revolves around the Green Destiny, a sword that appeared in the first movie. The sword was initially believed to be lost, but was hidden secretly in Peking.
Yu Shu Lien, reprised by actress Michelle Yeoh, appears in the first part, heading to Peking to pay respect to an old friend.
Hades Dai, played by Jason Scott Lee, serves as the antagonist, who wants the Green Destiny for himself due to the fact that no one has lost a battle using it.
New characters include Wei Fang, played by Harry Shum Jr. Wei Fang serves as Hades Dai's spy, who is sent to retrieve the sword but is eventually discovered and arrested. Snow Vase, played by newcomer Natasha Liu Bordizzo, is a warrior with an aura of mystery.
'Ip Man' star Donnie Yen plays Silent Wolf, a rogue warrior and Shu Lien's former lover.
One of the only positive reviews that critics have had for the new version of 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' is the improved CGI for every setting such as the rooftop scenes.
One of the most damning comments from a reviewer about the movie relates to apparent 'holes' in the plot.
The fight scenes were also regarded as average compared to the first movie. The sequel's fight scenes have been described as lacking 'magic realism' and emphasizing more on CGI.
Some viewers have complained that the subtitles in the movie is not in sync with the speech of the characters. There have also been some complaints on Weibo that the movie is too 'westernized'.
Despite the mixed reviews, most viewers appreciate the integration of Chinese and Western culture in the movie.
