Tech giant Google announced on Tuesday that it is renaming its Chromecast application to Google Cast. Google said that the change is part of its effort to show that the technology also applies to different platforms and not only limited to the Chromecast dongles.

The company said that the update will cover both the Android and iOS platforms. The update will be rolled out to its users within this week, according to Engadget.

For the uninitiated, Chromecast was released to compete with streaming media players like the Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and even Google's very own Android TV. The Chromecast was first billed as a low cost alternative to the abovementioned media players.

The Chromecast dongle was first released in 2013 and it allowed users to easily stream contents to their TV sets even if it is not a Smart TV. The simplicity and affordability of the dongle was one of its greatest factor and it helped propel the device eventually selling at least 20 million units. Statistics show that the Chromecast is the most popular streaming device in 2015.

Aside from its massive Chromecast platform, Google has been busy expanding the product in order to incorporate more technology and features. In September 2015, Google unveiled the second generation model of the device, the aptly called Chromecast 2.

The Chromecast 2 features a new hardware design which ditches the stick design and adopt a new round face making it easier to be plugged into a TV. Along with the new Chromecast 2, Google also launched Chromecast Audio which essentially turns any speaker with an AUX input into an Internet-connected device.

Lately, Google has been working with third party companies in its effort to integrate its casting technologies into other products. According to Tech Crunch, Google is said to be working with companies like Pioneer, LG, Sony, Harman Kardon and Philips, among others.
