Lu Yong, director of the Beijing Commission of Tourism Development, mentioned at a conference that "The city is considering further cooperation with Beijing Capital International Airport and Air China to come up with air ticket discounts, while building an alliance to attract more foreign transit tourists".
Since January 1 of this year the 72-hour visa-free policy for tourists has been given to 45 countries. However, the results of the visa-free policy did not meet the expected effect.
The commission has also seen that during the first half months of 1989, 1998, 2003 and 2008 inbound tourist had dropped down.
The dollar conversion of the yuan has increased tourist expenditure . Air pollution in the capital is one of the reasons why the inbound tourism has suffered. In addition to that, Beijing does not meet the international standard making potential tourist decide not to visit China.
One of the most effective way to attract travelers is cheap air tickets, China Tourism Academy's Jiang Yiyi said.
"Many tourists prefer transit stops, either due to a cheaper air ticket or the additional value this brings. Cheaper air tickets play a key role in attracting more foreign visitors," she said.
Yang Jingson,a professor International Tourism Academy mentioned that Beijing should conduct a study on foreign tourist that took benefit from visa-free policy. In that way the capital can design a customized tourism products.
"Many of the tour packages no longer meet foreign tourists' demands," he said.
Takahide Tanaka, director of a medical institute who lives in Tokyo, has been a frequent business traveler to Beijing said "Many of the tour packages in the city have remained unchanged for years," he said. "What's more, the devaluation of the yen and appreciation of the yuan has made traveling in China for Japanese people much more expensive."
