Rumors about an upgraded PlayStation 4 console first surfaced back in March. More recently, reports indicate that the upgraded console is codenamed Neo and will feature an improved processor, graphics processing unit, and RAM.
According to Giant Bomb, the upgraded PlayStation 4 has a faster clock speed, faster memory, and an improved graphics processing unit. The report added that the hard drive might be the same with the one installed in the current PlayStation 4, but there are indications of a possible upgrade of the device's disk speed and capacity.

The documents received by Giant Bomb reveal that starting in October, every PlayStation 4 game will be required to ship in two modes; the Base Mode, which will run the game on the current PlayStation 4 console, and the NEO Mode, which will be used for the upcoming upgraded console.
In terms of hardware specs, the Neo has a lot more to offer. According to Game Spot, the Neo has eight Jaguar Cores clocked at 2.1 GHz, an upgraded AMD GCN with 36 CUs clocked at 911 MHz and 8GB of GDDR5 memory at 218GB/s. In comparison, the current generation PlayStation 4 has eight Jaguar Cores clocked at 1.6GHz, an AMD GCN with 18CUs clocked at 800MHz and 8GB of GDDR5 memory at 176GB/s.
Games that will run on NEO mode will be able to take advantage of the upgraded hardware specs. This means that the games can run on a more stable frame rate with higher visual fidelity, especially when running at 1080p resolution.
There are indications showing that PlayStation Neo will support 4K image output. However, the games are not strictly required to run on 4K native resolution.
Based on the documents acquired by Giant Bomb, Sony might opt to support 4K and UltraHD resolution for Neo game builds. Sony is also giving video game developers complete freedom to develop their games in 4K resolution.
Despite this freedom in development, Sony has repeatedly said that all games should at least maintain or exceed the frame rate of the game on the original PlayStation 4 console.
