Tesla announced that it is offering a one-month free trial of the company's Autopilot feature for the Model S car. The free trial will be open for owners of the Model S who did not opt in for the $2,500 option when they purchased their car.
All Tesla Model S and Model X car sold since late 2014 have a hardware that enables the company's self-driving feature called Autopilot. However, for owners who did not pick the $2,500 Autopilot option, the software that drives the car was not included.

Normally, the Autopilot feature costs $2,500 when picked at purchase. The price shoots up to $3,000 once the option was picked as an after-purchase add-on, according to The Verge.
Most car analysts said that the $3,000 Autopilot option seems a bit expensive for regular users. In order to market the feature and value of Autopilot to its consumers, Tesla will offer it for a one-month free trial.
Market analysts said that Tesla's market strategy is clever since the only way to present the value of Autopilot is to let people use it in real time.
The Autopilot feature was launched back in October 2015. The feature allows Tesla cars to steer, change lanes on highways and park with minimal input from the driver. The feature rely on computer software and hardware. As part of Autopilot's safety features, warning systems for side collision and other sensors are added into the car.
According to Fortune, the feature can be downloaded by Model S and Model X car owners. Since the feature is activated over-the-air, Tesla can remotely end the Autopilot trial period once it expires.
Tesla claims that its Autopilot feature uses machine learning in order to function. Moreover, the feature also collects the driver's driving preference in order to further better itself. This means that the more customers use the Tesla Autopilot feature, the more data it creates and the smarter it becomes.
