This latest innovation suggests that forthcoming mobile devices do not need to use buttons for scanning fingerprints, making it "button-less." It is said that this type of fingerprint scanner provides flawless experience of required fingerprint validation. The suggested button-less fingerprint scanner will let tech companies provide its users an impeccable authentication design. The companies involved in the creation of button-less fingerprint scanner speculates that tech companies will be using this innovation in all their upcoming 2016 releases.
The Verge presented a comparison between the typical fingerprint scanner and the button-less module. The typical scanner needs a designated location on the mobile device to be able to distinguish fingerprint authentication, while button-less fingerprint scanner can detect fingerprint without taking too much space on the device, or simply without having to press any button.
Currently, Apple and Samsung are using either the Home button or side button for fingerprint scanning while Sony Xperia models and Google Nexus phones normally puts the sensor at the back or side of the device.
LG Innotek was kind enough to share how they were able to integrate the fingerprint sensor without needing to have an ample space on the device. The tech company explained that a gutter measuring 0.3mm thick should be created, and that furrow should be placed under the glass cover of the mobile device and stick it using an adhesive.
It is said that button-less fingerprint scanner helps manufacturers focus on other features to add on their devices because of the space it may save. Also, this technology could help tech companies produce devices that are water-resistant with a thinner and sleeker appearance.
When it comes to the accuracy of the button-less fingerprint scanner, LG Innotek said that it has FAR (False Acceptance Rate) percentage of 0.002. This number shows that the sensor can still precisely recognize the user's biometrics or someone's fingerprint even if it will not use any buttons, Droid Life reported.
