'The Mummy' reboot has officially cast Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe to play the famous mad scientist Dr. Jekyll. He joins a growing cast including Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, and Annabelle Wallis. The actor also revealed that Alex Kurtzman's upcoming reboot is indeed a truly "scary" film.

Crowe revealed during an interview to promote his new action-comedy film 'The Nice Guys' that he is set to play the famous fictional mad scientist. He also joked about his relationship with co-star Tom Cruise.

"I'm gonna do it... I'm gonna play Dr. Henry Jekyll. It's very interesting, what they're gonna do with that stuff. I've had a couple of chats about it with the director [Alex Kurtzman]. I've known Tom Cruise since 1992, or something like that. When he was married to an Australian, I was really good friends with him. But when he got divorced, I was part of the settlement package, and I went to Nicole [Kidman]," he said.

The actor was asked about how the upcoming reboot will be any different from the previous ones. Crowe could only hint that 'The Mummy' reboot is "designed to seriously scare the sh*t out of you."

The 52-year-old actor also talked about Kurtzman's approach to directing the first of Universal's interconnected monster movie franchise.  "He knows how to get something from an idea on the page onto a soundstage and into a camera... Sure, I would imagine he's scared sh*tless right about now, and having a hard time sleeping because he's got ten million things on his mind right now," Crowe said.

Crowe admitted that he is also actively collaborating with the director on several ideas for the upcoming film. "...But when we started talking about this idea, there were a few things I put up in the air and he picked up on them... Those kinds of creative collaborative conversations, if somebody says something that goes off in your mind and that other person bounces off of that, you're actually in a really good place," he said.

'The Mummy' reboot is an upcoming action and adventure-fantasy film intended as the first movie in Universal's planned shared monster universe. It is scheduled to be released on June 9, 2017.
