American sprinter Justin Gatlin opened his Shanghai Diamond League campaign with a league record to win the men's 100m while Croatian Olympic winner Sandra Perkovic registered an impressive win in women's discus title on Saturday.

Thirty-four-year-old Gatlin (9.94 seconds) beat Qatar's Femi Ogunode (10.07) in the 100m event. Kenyan Ferguson Rotich (1:45.68 seconds) beat fellow Kenyan athlete and world record holder David Rudisha (1: 46:24 seconds) to record a surprise 800m win in Shanghai.

Chinese athlete Gao Xinglong secured China first medal by winning the men's long jump title in the 2016 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) event.

"I have been suffering from a foot injury so I am satisfied with the result. I looked at this meeting as a training session," Gao said after the victory.

Perkovis, who was defeated by Denia Caballero at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, claimed the women's discus title with a 70.88 throw in her fourth attempt. Aussie athlete Dani Samuels ( 67.77) and Beijing Championships winner Caballero ( 66.17) secured silver and bronze respectively.

"This victory means a lot to me. To open the season with a meeting record and world lead is a great start," an elated Perkovic said. "I have never been in better shape and I am actually a little angry with myself that I didn't throw a little further. Maybe I will do that at Prefontaine IDL."

"For the first time in many years I am healthy without back, knee and ankle problems. I am 100 per cent healthy. I know I have to be in great shape to be in the fight to win gold and deliver my dream of gold at the Rio Olympics," she stated.
