The Sacramento Kings are reportedly prepared to lose NBA champion point guard Rajon Rondo in the offseason as the team has become not so eager in keeping him next season.

Rondo is set to become an unrestricted free agent this July as his one-year, $9.5 million contract with Sacramento expires. Several teams are said to be planning to offer the 30-year-old, four-time NBA All-Star a max salary contract at that time, but the Kings are not among those who are willing to do that, according to SB Nation.

The report said that Sacramento management is ready "to cut bait" with the point guard "if the bidding for him gets beyond a certain threshold", which means that the Kings are happy to keep him at the right price, but they are also okay to lose him if the cost is not within the team's financial plan.

It was a change of heart from senior team officials as they initially said that they are doing everything to keep Rondo in Sacramento at least up to the next season, but the development was actually a "welcome news" for some of the Kings' fans and supporters who believes that the mercurial playmaker is dragging the team down.

Sacramento finished the most recent regular season at the 10th spot of the Western Conference standings with a dismal 33-49 slate. They missed the playoffs even if their starters included DeMarcus Cousins, Willie Cauley-Stein, Rudy Gay, Darren Collison, and Rondo, a lineup that was predicted to compete in the postseason even before the season started.

Fansided suggested that one ideal destination for Rondo in free-agency is the Indiana Pacers. After the recent firing of head coach Frank Vogel, team president Larry Bird is said to be keen on changing the team's offense into a run-and-gun, up-tempo style, something that Rondo could be an asset of.

Pairing Rondo with starting guard George Hill in the Pacers' backcourt could do wonders for the squad and can give a lot of headache to opposing teams. The two are great backcourt defenders that can hold their own with anyone in the league while the combination of Rondo and Paul George in offense is a partnership that has a lot of potential.
