English Premier League perennial powerhouse squad Manchester United is reportedly set to name former Chelsea champion head coach Jose Mourinho as its new manager after enduring another disappointing season with current boss Louis van Gaal.

BBC Sport reported that the Red Devils "are set to appoint Jose Mourinho as their new manager" as a deal was believed to have been "agreed in principle" with the 53-year-old Portuguese mentor to take over from van Gaal this summer.

The final straw that said to have turned off United's senior team officials against the 64-year-old Dutch manager was the team's failure to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League competitions, a club continental tournament that they were regularly a part of throughout the years.

A flash report from BBC just announced that van Gaal is officially sacked by Red Devils' management and that Mourinho is on his way to replace him as chief bench tactician at the Old Trafford in the next few days.

The report also said that "severance terms" for van Gaal, who only expended two years of the three-year deal he had, is already under discussions. The Dutchman is said to be earning an annual wage of £6.4 million with United.

Mourinho's appointment as new Red Devils head coach is expected to be officially made on Tuesday when the Special One convenes with team executives.

The fate of van Gaal's existing coaching staff is still unclear, including that of assistant coach Ryan Giggs, who is a fan-favorite at the Old Trafford.

United finished the season fifth in the English top flight table even as they are tied on points with cross-city rivals Manchester City, who recorded a higher goal difference of +30 as compared to the Red Devils' +14.

With the fifth place finish, United was not able to become eligible for the Champions League next season, but is set to compete in the Europa League.

Mourinho was sacked by defending EPL champions Chelsea in December of last year after a lackluster start to the 2015-2016 season which found the Blues struggling to stay away from bottom three relegation.
