Super Junior member Kangin is currently under investigation for his involvement in a recent drunk driving incident, local police confirmed Tuesday.

The incident took place early morning of May 24, Tuesday. According to SBS, the idol group member slammed a rented Mercedes-Benz vehicle into a street light in Gangnam at around 2 a.m. The police were immediately dispatched to the scene after receiving a report from the owner of a nearby convenience store. However, it appeared that the singer immediately fled after the crash.

At 10:50 a.m. Kangin turned himself over to the police with the assistance of his manager.

Although Kangin claimed he has no memory of the accident, witnesses who saw the collision testified against him in the investigation.

"I didn't know it was a street lamp, I thought it was a curb," Kangin reportedly told the police. No one was recorded to have been injured.

It was later discovered that Kangin's high alcohol level was at 0.05 percent, which is enough to have the singer's driver's license suspended.

"According to estimates, Kangin's blood alcohol content would have gone up even more after driving the car, but we are still currently investigating whether he was drunk or not," the police stated.

A CCTV footage showed Kangin going into a store to purchase alcohol. In other video, Kangin's car was seen stopping near a light post before speeding off, Soompi reported. Two hours later, the same car returned and the accident transpired.

Kangin's agency SM Entertainment has issued an apology in behalf of the singer. As a consequence of his actions, Kangin has been banned from participating in future performances and activities until further notice.

"Kangin is deeply regretful of his actions and will cease all entertainment-related schedules to take some time to self-reflect. Once again, we sincerely apologize for worrying you," the company said in statement.

This is not the singer's first brush in with the law. In 2009, he was also apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol after he rammed into two taxi cabs. In 2010, he was summarily indicted for the DUI hit-and-run and fined 8 million won.
