Adapting videogames into full-feature length films is not a new movie fad. Since the introduction of arcade games in the 1980s, films based on popular videogames like "Super Mario Bros.," "Mortal Kombat" and "Street Fighter" have been developed and produced. Despite their popularity, most, if not all, adaptations have left videogame fans underwhelmed. Most gamers cry foul over how far most videogame movies veer away from the original source material.

Still, production companies insist on translating popular games into film features. In fact, a couple of days ago, "The Angry Birds Movie" just made its North American premiere. Moreover, in light of the recent "Angry Birds" premiere, it was confirmed that another videogame adaptation would soon be in development. This time around, audiences would be privy to the movie translation of the popular mobile game application - "Fruit Ninja."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tripp Vinson from Vinson Films will produce the "Fruit Ninja" feature film. In partnership with Halfbrick Studios, Vinson plans to produce a live-action family comedy based on the popular ninja bashing fruit game. Vinson has since tapped J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani, writers of "How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack," to write the upcoming "Fruit Ninja" film. The report further reveals that Sam White and Tara Farney would serve as executive producers of Vinson's adaptation.

The movie adaptation of "Fruit Ninja" seems to be incredulous to some film industry insiders. However, according to BBC, "The Angry Birds Movie" has since knocked "Captain America" off the top spot in the United States box office during its premiere. Despite mixed to negative reviews from critics, the film has since earned over $100 million on a $73 million budget.

"Fruit Ninja," which was released in April 2010, was developed by Halfbrick Studios for iPod and iPhone users. Since its release, the game has reached phenomenal popularity with over 1 billion mobile downloads. It currently holds a respectable 75/100 on Metacritic and an 87 percent on Game Rankings. The "Fruit Ninja" franchise has since spawned an Xbox 360 Kinect version and PlayStation Vita version.
