The popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game "League of Legends" is now as an official sport at Unigames. The game's developer, Riot Games, officially confirmed the news.
Unigames is a university sports league which is open to New Zealand and Australian club teams. The league currently counts 39 athletic sports on its list. Now, "League of Legends" is joining that list.

The "League of Legends" Unigames league format will consist of four stages. The league will start in June with inter-university tournaments. Gaming clubs will have to battle each other to earn the chance to represent their respective universities at higher tournaments.
After successfully winning the inter-university tournament, winning clubs will advance to regional and national tournaments. The first regional bracket will take place from July 5 to July 7.
The epitome of the league is the Australian University Games which will be held from September 25-30.
Interested gamers can visit the official website of Riot Games to find out about their university's "League of Legends" club.
The head of e-sports at Riot Game's Oceania division said that the inclusion of "League of Legends" to Unigames is an accomplishment not only for the game but for the whole e-sports community since it has continued to struggle for recognition and acceptance as a competitive sport.
In a statement acquired by Game Planet, Australian University Sport chief executive officer Don Knap said that "the student engagement opportunities that result from the rapidly increasing popularity of esports across campuses in Australia has certainly grabbed our attention."
The popularity of e-sports continues to grow by the day. In Australia, this persuaded Riot Games to support the country-wide Oceanic Pro League, which offers huge prizes to gamers and requires a high level of gaming skill, according to CNet.
