"X-Men: Apocalypse" has trounced "Alice Through the Looking Glass" at the US box office.

The Bryan Singer-directed film which features a team of super-powered heroes rode roughshod over the family-themed movie, as it earned an estimated $80 million during the three-day Memorial Day weekend, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Many were quite surprised with the "X-Men: Apocalypse's" impressive showing at the  American box-office after it was earlier lambasted by critics.

The movie has so far earned $265.8 million worldwide.

"X-Men: Apocalypse's" US run is expected to gross between the $85 million-$100 million, although Fox has scaled down its expectations as it projects the film's earnings to be within the $80 million range.

"We're very happy with this result as we introduce new characters in the X-Men universe," said Chris Aronson, Fox domestic distribution chief, of the movie's strong performance at the US box-office.

"And for us to be at this number globally already means we're in good shape," Aronson added.

James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne and Lucas Till are reprising their roles as Magneto, Professor Charles Xavier, Beast and Havok, respectively.

"X-Men: Apocalypse"  has brought new actors into its fold which includes Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Olivia Munn as Psylocke, Sophie Turner as a young Jane Grey, Ben Hardy as Anel and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler.

Hugh Jackman also makes a cameo appearance as fan-favorite Wolverine.

Although "Apocalypse" may have fallen short of expectations, Disney's big-budget "Alice Through the Looking Glass ," on the other hand, got a lukewarm reception from American audiences.

The sequel to "Alice in Wonderland" received dismal reviews across the board, as it grossed a measly $28.1 million over the three-day weekend for an estimated $35 million during its four-day US debut.

This figure is in fact 70 percent less than the original "Alice in Wonderland," which opened to a stunning $116 million in the spring of 2010.

Industry observers speculate that the movie's poor showing could be due to recent developments regarding the personal life of one of its lead stars Johnny Depp.

Depp's wife Amber Heard was recently granted a restraining order after alleging that her husband had previously assaulted her.

In contrast, "X-Men: Apocalypse" seems to be impervious to negative reviews and publicity, as it continues to dominate the US box office.
