Wang Yihan defeated 22-year-old Tanvi Lad of India, who won over Australia's Tiffany Ho in the opening round of the tournament.  The 28-year-old London Olympics silver medalist needed only 33 minutes to wrap up the match with an easy 21-18, 21-6 victory.

The 28-year-old Shangha-native is coming fresh off a runner-up finish at the recently concluded BCA Indonesia Open in Jakarta. Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan beat Wang in the final round of the competition, denying her a chance to claim the Jakarta-based badminton championship title for the second time.

The fourth-seeded player of the tournament is looking to win the first Australian Open title of her career and is set to face the newly-crowned Indonesia Open champion again in the quarterfinal round on Friday.

Meanwhile, the incumbent world No. 6, Wang Shixian, got the better of compatriot He Bingjiao in two straight sets 21-19, 21-18 to enter the last 16 of the Sydney-based BWF World SuperSeries event, which carries a top prize of $750,000.

The 2010 Paris World Championships bronze-medalist wrapped up the victory over her fellow countrywoman in just 36 minutes to face another compatriot Li Xuerui for a spot in the semifinals berth.

Yihan and Shixian have been competing for the two 2016 Summer Olympics women's singles event spots allotted to China. 2010 London Olympics gold medalist Li Xuerui, Sun Yun and He Bingjiao are also in contention for the limited slot.
