Donald Glover is the latest addition to the ensemble cast of Marvel's "Spider-Man: Homecoming."

The casting announcement marks the actor's first role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, his character in the film is still being kept under wraps.

"Spiderman: Homecoming" centers on Peter Parker a.k.a. Spiderman and his life during his high-school years. The character was first played by Tobey Maguire in 2002's "Spider-Man," which spawned two sequels before the release of "The Amazing Spider-Man" starring Andrew Garfield in 2012.

"Spider-Man: Homecoming" stars Tom Holland as the titular character, Marissa Tomei as Aunt May, Michael Keaton as an unnamed villain and Zendaya as the lead actress. Robert Downey Jr. has also joined the project and will reprise his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man.

The supporting cast includes Tony Revolori, Laura Harrier and Kenneth Choi.

Glover's other movie credits include "Magic Mike XXL," starring alongside Channing Tatum and Matt Bomer and Ridley Scott's "The Martian." The actor has also featured in television shows such as "Community" and "Girls."

He has also created and produced "Atlanta," a series that revolves around two cousins on their way up through the Atlanta rap scene. The show aims to tackle the opposing views on art vs commerce, success and race.

"Spider-Man: Homecoming" hails from producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal with Jon Watts as the film's director.

Glover's casting has started speculation about his character in the upcoming film. Some of comic book characters that have been linked to the actor include the Chameleon, the Hobgoblin, the Prowler and the Jackal among many others.

While Marvel producers have stayed mum about these details, it is expected that more information will be leaked online when the film begins production later this month.

"Spider-man: Homecoming" is scheduled for a July 7, 2017 release.
