The project is being produced by Marc Platt, with book writer Winnie Holzman and lyricist/composer Stephen Schwartz to pen the screenplay. Stephen Daltry will direct the movie.
The details of cast and production crew for the movie have not been announced.
The movie's plot, which is adapted from Gregory Maguire's bestselling novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, is told from the perspective of the witches in "The Land of Oz" before and after Dorothy's arrival.
Wicked centers on the unlikely friendship between Elphaba and Glinda - the duo who will grow up to become the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The central characters were played by Idina Menzel (Frozen) and Kristin Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies) in the original production.
The musical adaptation of Wicked debuted in 2003 and has since become a cultural phenomenon. The show has won three Tony awards during its 13-year run and has been the 10th longest-running Broadway play of all time.
With 50 million fans recorded to have seen the show live, Wicked hit the $1 billion mark in Broadway ticket sales in March; and $4 billion, globally.
Defying Gravity, the signature song of Wicked, has been translated into different languages after its release in 2003. The 5-minute song now has Korean, Dutch, Japanese, Finnish and Spanish versions.
In 2007, Menzel dropped Defying Gravity as her single and later included it in her 2008 album, I Stand. The song has also been featured on FOX's musical series, Glee where it was performed by co-stars Lea Michelle and Chris Colfer.
