Chinese-based mobile manufacturer OPPO will launch its R9S smartphone later this year as a successor to the OPPO R9 that was launched back in March with OPPO R9 Plus, as Taiwanese media reported.

The company is doing very well and has successfully shipped well over 7 million units of R9 smartphone since its said launch date. The name R9S seems to be a logical name for a successor since it is expected to debut months after the R9.

Rumours suggest that the upcoming phone will have a design similar to the predecessor, since it will have a premium metal body with a very thin profile.

Its processors are supplied by Qualcomm, which is expected to start shipping chips this August to OPPO. This will make it possible that R9S will be available in markets in September or October. Either the Snapdragon 652 chipset found on the R9 Plus or the slightly less powerful Snapdragon 625 chipset will power it. However, there is no confirmation yet on the chipset's name.

Rumours also suggest that OPPO's Super VOOC fast charging technology will be supporting the device. This technology can fully charge a 2500 mAh capacity battery in just 15 minutes.

R9 is packed with a 2850 mAh battery, so R9S is expected to have an identical unit, if not a larger one. R9S is also expected to have an international variant like R9 that will be sold outside China as OPPO F1 Plus. So there will likely be similar branding for R9S.

R9 comeswith a 5.5-inch full high-definition display in a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and has a 16-megapixel rear camera and a 13-megapixel front-facing camera, while R9 Plus comes with a 6-inch full high-definition display in the same resolution and has a 16-megapixel cameras at the back and on the front.
