The action camera market was once dominated by GoPro but the company, based on latest sales statistics, is somehow struggling to keep its pace. The main reason for this is the advent of new players who are offering the same quality product for less. The latest to join the market is Chinese tech giant Xiaomi, which launched its Yi 4K action camera at a relatively low price point of just $249.

Xiaomi announced its 4K shooting action camera back in its homeland a couple of months ago. According to Giz China, Xiaomi announced a targeted release date of July 12 for the Yi 4K.

The Xiaomi Yi 4K action camera has a 12-megapixel Sony sensor with F2.8 aperture. Compared to the costly GoPro Hero 4 which is considered as the benchmark for all high-end action cameras, the Yi 4K has a more powerful Ambarella chipset.

As the name suggests, the Yi 4K shoots 4K resolution videos. It supports 4K video recording with 30 frames per second refresh rate. Once users lower the resolution to 1080p, they would be able to shoot at 120 frames per second. Further lowering the resolution to 720p would allow users to shoot at 240 frames per second.

According to Android Headlines, the Yi 4K has a 1400mAh battery pack which can record up to 120 minutes of 4K videos at 30 frames per second. Lowering the resolution will give users more recording time.

The current version of the Yi 4K, since it was exclusively released in China, only has Chinese user interface. However, Xiaomi said that since it is bringing its product to the Western shores, it is working to add an English interface, as well as a handful of language support.

Interested buyers can get their hands early on the Xiaomi Yi 4K since the device is already available for pre-order on Amazon US.
