Around 78 people have lost their lives, and another 91 people are missing, after rounds of torrential rains wrecked havoc on parts of Northern China over the week, state media Xinhua reported.

The northern Hebei province is reported to be worst hit, with around 36 people killed and 77 missing. Chinese state media claims that 50,000 homes have collapsed, and more than eight million people have been affected in the entire province due to heavy rainfall.

According to local media, the death toll in Hebei province's industrial town, Xingtai, increased dramatically on Saturday, after a huge wall collapsed in one of the villages in the middle of the night.

The local government has revealed that around 8.6 million people have been directly affected by incessant rainfall and flooding. Additionally, 1.5 million hectares of crops have been damaged, causing an economic loss of nearly 20 billion Yuan ($3 billion).

The affected areas are facing severe power cuts and communication problems. Many angry residents have blamed local administrators for not issuing warning over severe rainfall and flooding. China's central bank on Friday issued a statement assuring that it would provide financial support to all the affected areas.

China has experienced several natural disasters over the past few weeks, with this year's summer rainfall being especially heavy. Last week also saw super Typhoon Nepartak killing dozens of people and damaging thousands of homes in Fujian province. Chinese authorities fired three officials for their poor administrative response to deal with super typhoon.
