3D Fantasy-action-adventure film "Time Raiders" topped the box office in China with a whopping $64.8 million opening over the weekend.

The film's smashing opening is more than double the collection raked in by animated film "The Secret Life of Pets," which released earlier this week. Directed by Hong Kong filmmaker Daniel Lee, "Time Raiders" was also responsible for moving last week's leader "League of Gods" to seventh place, according to Variety.

"Time Raiders," previously titled "The Lost Tomb," follows the story of an uncle and his nephew as they set off on an adventure to explore ancient tombs. The film features a star-studded cast including Jing Boran, Lu Han, Ma Sichun and Wang Jingchun.

With more than 85,000 shows a day, not only was "Time Raiders" being screened at the largest circuit of theaters in China, it also scored the best per screen average, collecting nearly $1,000 per screen per day. Add the $5 million in revenues earned from previews and the film's opening collection totals up to $70.8 million, as per data obtained by Entgroup.

Even though China has eased regulations on the release of summer Hollywood flicks, "The Secret Life of Pets" was given an Aug. 1 release slot." The Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures' film raked in a per screen average of $500 per day and after a six-day run, the film earned $28.9 million in total.

Chinese-South Korean romance "Sweet Sixteen" came in third place with $13.1 million after opening in theaters on Friday. The Chinese remake of "My Best Friend's Wedding" ranked fourth and despite a multinational cast, which includes the likes of Shu Qi, Rhydian Vaughn, Victoria Song and Feng Shaofeng, the film only managed to rack up $3.49 million after three days.

Holdover "Skiptrace" collected $3.29 million for the fifth position, taking its domestic total to $127 million after 18 days. The Jackie Chan starrer was followed by cartoon "Yugo & Lala 3" with only $950,000, increasing its cumulative to $8.68 million.

Last week's chart topper, Jet Li's "League of Gods" bombed at the box office in its second week, earning just $760,000, a significant drop from its $30.5 million opening.

"The Legend of Tarzan" also held on to a place on the charts, with a score of $290,000. After running in theaters for 20 days, the film has accumulated a total of $45.6 million.
