Rio 2016: Olympic Defending Champion Li Xiaoxia Advances to Semifinals of Women's Singles Event

Table tennis Grand Slam champion Li Xiaoxia of China ousted Cheng I-Ching of the Chinese Taipei with a perfect 4-0 victory at the quarterfinals of the ongoing 2016 Rio Olympic Games on Tuesday.

With the win, the 28-year-old native of Anshan, Liaoning advanced to the semifinal round of the event. Li is moving closer to successfully defending the Olympic title that she won four years ago in London, United Kingdom.

According to Xinhua, China's women's head coach Kong Linghui called a timeout for the 2013 World Championships winner when Li was 3-0 games up and leading in the fourth set 10-6. The Chinese blue-chip table tennis player came back to the court and wrapped it up 11-5, 11-5, 11-6, 11-6.

Li has appeared in the World Cup on five occasions and bagged the gold medal in the year 2008. She is a seven-time ITTF World Tour winner.

Aside from her individual podium finish in London, she is a part of the national squad of China that won the gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. The elite Chinese female paddler is currently ranked No. 5 in the world.

Li is the 2010 Asian Games champion and also a mixed doubles and women's doubles winner.

Li's next match will be against the sixth-seeded Ai Fukuhara of Japan, who defeated the event's No. 2 seed Feng Tianwei of Singapore. The 27-year-old Fukuhara, who is currently ranked eighth in the world, is a women's singles bronze medalist at the 2010 Asian Games.

Meanwhile, Ma Long, and Ding Ning, the top seed for the men's and women's singles competition respectively, made their Olympic debut with stylish victories. Men's singles second seed Zhang Jike also won his match against Chinese Taipei's Chen Chien-An.
