Thousands of visitors waited in line overnight on Friday to be one of the first people to step foot on the world's highest and longest glass-bottomed bridge in China.

The glass walkway, which 430 meters long and 6 meters wide, is suspended 300 meters above a canyon and connects the famous "Avatar" mountains (the film was shot here) in Zhangjiajie, which is located in central China's Hunan province, according to BBC News.

The skywalk, designed by Israeli architect Haim Dotan, cost about $3.4 million to construct and includes 99 panes of three-layered glass. The bridge has already set 10 world records for its design and construction, according to the management committee.

Adrenaline junkies will also be able to zipline and bungee jump off the man-made wonder by June, next year, said Joe Chen, vice general manager of the Zhangjiajie Canyon Tourism Management Company.

Even though the bridge's height and glass-bottomed design may raise concerns and scare off some visitors, officials have held events to demonstrate the safety of the structure.

In July, a journalist was invited to test the strength of the bridge's glass panes. BBC's Dan Simmons struck the glass with a sledgehammer several times and although the top layer of the glass shattered, the pane remained secure. If that wasn't enough a car full of passengers was also driven through the walkway to prove its safety.

The bridge can hold up to 800 people at the same time but visitors are recommended to book tickets in advance as a maximum of 8,000 visitors will be allowed on the glass skywalk everyday. Tickets are priced at 138 yuan ($20) per person.

Made of 99 glass panels, the bridge can bear up to 800 people at the same time, a Zhangjiajie official told China's state news agency, Xinhua.

Visitors are strongly encouraged to buy tickets in advance, as only some 8,000 people each day will be able to go through the spine-tingling experience, which costs 138 yuan ($20) per person.
