Chinese tech giant ZTE has closed a deal with Belgium's Telenet. ZTE would be responsible for upgrading Telenet's radio equipment infrastructure across the entire country. The upgrade includes replacing Telenet's current 2G infrastructure and optimizing the firm's 3G, 4G, and 4G+ coverage.

Telenet has about 3,000 base stations in Belgium. The upgrade will enhance Telenet's network capacity to accommodate the growing data demand from its customers, all of which are currently hosted by Orange. The Telenet network update is scheduled to be completed by the spring of 2018, according to ZDNet.

In February, Telenet completed the takeover of mobile operator BASE for $1.47. The takeover was part of the initial plan to gain access to the mobile telecommunications market. Telenet is making a sizeable investment to build and upgrade its mobile network. The company has set aside $334 million to bank roll the upgrades.

In a statement, Telenet chief executive officer John Porter said, "Since the takeover of BASE, we've already explained on many occasions how high our mobile ambitions are. Today, we're ready, and the project is taking shape."

ZTE has been looking for alternative business opportunities as the company was slapped with trade sanctions by the U.S. This has significantly affected the company's growth. With the recent Telenet deal, ZTE appears to be looking to tap into business opportunities in the European market.
