At Least 17 Dead, 30 Kidnapped In Suspected Boko Haram Attack in Nigeria

Suspected Boko Haram militants carried out attacks in the northeastern Borno State of Nigeria beginning Thursday, leaving at least 17 people dead and kidnapping 30 teenagers, amid a standing ceasefire with the Nigerian military, a local official told reporters Sunday.

One of the students taken by the Nigerian Islamic extremists in April was found wandering through a village in what is the first confirmed escape of any of the kidnapped girls, Nigerian police reported Thursday.

Three months after 276 girls were abducted from their school dormitory in Nigeria, the Islamist group Boko Haram on Monday admitted it was responsible for the kidnapping and announced plans to sell the remaining 223 girls to the market.
