Chinese tech giant Baidu is planning to use the new Nvidia Drive PX 2 microchip as the company nears the completion of its self-driving system. Nvidia unveiled the Drive PX 2 chip at the GPU Technology Conference in Beijing on Monday.
As more tech companies and traditional car manufacturers are throwing their hat into the race for autonomous driving cars, Nvidia is stepping up its game to provide power-efficient microchips that will serve as the brain of future self-driving cars.
Prior to the launch of Drive PX 2, Nvidia and Baidu announced that they are working on a newly formed partnership to produce a self-driving car architecture that is based on the cloud and will employ artificial intelligence.
Nvidia claims that the new Drive PX 2 is half the size of the original version, which was launched back in January. The new version of the Nvidia Drive PX 2 is also power efficient, requiring just 10 watts of power, according to Fortune. The Drive PX 2 has a single processor and combines incoming data coming from different sensors using deep neural networks to produce pictures of objects around a car.
