Two tech heavyweights, Leica and Huawei, recently announced a newly-formed partnership that will kickstart a research and development center. The new facility will be situated in Leica's headquarters in Wetzlar, Germany.

Dubbed as the Max Berek Innovation Lab, named after the famous pioneer of optics and innovator of Leica's early products, the facility will continue the research and development towards optics and lenses.

Huawei said in a press statement that the new R & D facility will focus on optical systems and software-based technologies. This is aimed at pushing the boundaries of imaging quality with regards to photographic science and mobile applications. It will also delve into augmented reality and virtual reality, although the exact extent of the research is yet to be disclosed.

This is not the first time Leica and Huawei joined hands together in a project. The two companies have already worked together in various projects in the past.

In April, Huawei launched its first Leica-branded P9 smartphone, a device that served as a landmark for the two companies' collaborator efforts.

According to The Verge, Leica's contribution to Huawei P9's camera design was considered as a major breakthrough. Moreover, the P9's camera was widely lauded as one of the best in the market. It was positively received by both users and the critic's circle alike.

The newly-formed partnership of Leica and Huawei has stirred the tech community, especially now that the Chinese government is imposing strict rules on international firms doing business with local companies.

On the other hand, Leica's decision to share its headquarters to a foreign firm, lest to say a Chinese one at that, is also making headways as a major breakthrough in international industrial partnerships.
