Rumors claimed that Apple is now working on its own OLED technology which will most likely debut with the iPhone 8.

The American tech giant surprised many in the tech community when it decided to equip its latest flagship device, the iPhone 7, with an LCD screen despite the fact that many major smartphone makers are starting to adopt the newer and more efficient OLED technology.

According to the Nikkei Asian Review, Sharp president Tai Jeng-wu said "iPhone has been evolving and now it is switching from LTPS (low-temperature poly-silicon) to OLED panels."

It is important to note that Sharp is Apple's major supplier of display panels. Moreover, Tai started working with Sharp following the company's acquisition of Foxconn back in August.

Despite using an outdated technology, many tech critics still praised the iPhone 7's screen, although some argue that using OLED screen will give iPhone displays a sharper color contrast.

Using OLED screens will also allow Apple to develop curved and foldable screens, something that is not possible using the current LCD technology.

Apple has yet to confirm if it will transition to using OLED screens in the iPhone 8. However, Tai said that Sharp is currently building a facility that will focus on manufacturing OLED panels. Tai said that if Sharp's major customers in the United States demand for OLED panels, the company will be ready.

Rumors suggested that Apple is starting to look for alternative components for the next iPhone device which is expected to hit the market by 2017 and will coincide with the phone's tenth anniversary.
