Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love set the NBA record for most points in a first quarter with 34 on Wednesday in a game against the Portland Trailblazers. Buoyed by Love's impressive first quarter performance, the Cavs went on to win the game, 125-137.

Aside from setting the all-NBA record for most points in the first quarter, Love also set a team record for most points in any period. Love downed 11 of his 14 first quarter field goal attempts including a career-high 8-out-10 3-pointers, according to NBA.com.

Love's first quarter dominance was just three points short of the league record for any points in any quarter, a record held by Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson. In the first quarter, Love outscored the whole Blazer squad, which managed to score just 31 points, according to ESPN.

Love went on to score a total of 40 points throughout the game shooting 60 percent on the field and a perfect 8-out-8 on the free throw line. This is Love's first 40-point game for the Cavs, and his first since April 14, 2014 when he was still playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Love went scoreless in the second quarter when he missed his only shot. He was also scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Prior to Love's record setting feat, LeBron James held the Cavs record for points scored in any quarter with 24 and he did it in three separate occasions. As a comparison, James' record points in a single quarter is 25.

Love's career-high record for most points in a single game is 51, which he achieved on March 23, 2012 while still playing for the Timberwolves.
