A United Nations medical worker who was infected by the Ebola virus in Liberia died in a Leipzig hospital where he was being treated for the disease, a German news media reported.
The hospital released a statement regarding the UN worker's death but did not disclose further information about the case. However, according to the doctors who cared for the 56-year-old man, the patient who was originally from Sudan, died overnight despite being given the experimental drug.

The man was brought for treatment to Leipzig's St. George clinic on Thursday, where his arrival was announced through a statement. The hospital said the man was in critical condition upon arrival, but was stable.
In addition, the hospital guaranteed that the man will be placed in an isolated unit to avoid the risk of transmission.
According to the clinic's chief executive, Dr. Iris Minde, the third patient was safely isolated to prevent the infection of relatives, visitors or other patients. She added that the clinic is observing a strict protocol in accordance to the WHO standards in handling the case.
Meanwhile, Dr. Thomas Grunewald, a senior doctor in the Infectious Diseases and Nephrology department of the hospital, said Thursday that medical aides who will look after the patient will be required to wear protective gear.
The U.N. health worker was the third Ebola case in Germany, but was the first one to die from the disease.
The first Ebola case in the country was a man from Senegal, who worked for the World Health Organization. He was brought to a Hamburg hospital in August and was released in October 3. He has since returned home.
The second Ebola case in the country was a doctor from Uganda who was among the medical volunteers working for an Italian relief organization in West Africa. The doctor was sent to a Frankfurt hospital and is still receiving treatment.
