Apple Pay
Apple's CEO Tim Cook officially announced Apple Pay would start on Monday. The payment service has been in testing for a few months, working out the kinks of contactless mobile payment through NFC.
At launch, 220,000 stores in the U.S. will offer Apple Pay, alongside thousands of online stores and iOS apps. Apple is looking for a steady growth, but with Walmart and Best Buy already using another mobile payment service, it might be hard to convince the masses.
Continuity
Apple couldn't launch Continuity when the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were released, because it needs OS X Yosemite to function. With the update to OS X released last week, Apple will now add Continuity to iOS 8.1.
Continuity brings a few features to be the table to make moving from iOS or OS X easy. The first is Handoff, where a user can work on a project on iOS and move to OS X with just a swipe, or vise versa.
Users will also be able to take calls or send SMS messages on a paired OS X computer. Instant Hotspot will work as an instant link to cellular data connection, whenever the OS X machine is out of WiFi range.
iCloud Photo Library
Apple will roll out the public beta for iCloud Photo Library, the new way to store photos in the cloud and have them appear automatically on all devices. This will save storage for users who do not want photos on their device, at the price of more monthly cloud storage.
This is one of Apple's pushes to make iCloud more relevant in users lives, similar to Dropbox and Google Drive. Apple has dropped prices of iCloud significantly in the past year to increase potential subscribers.
