Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) backtracked on his provocative remarks against New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) Monday following what appears to be an increased Republican financial support to his flagging bid for a re-election.

Earlier in the week, Gov. Walker complained about being outspent by his Democrat gubernatorial opponent Mary Burke in the light of an increasingly tensed relationship with his deep-pocketed supporters, particularly the Republican Governors Association (RGA).

He also spoke dismissively of the upcoming visit of Gov. Christie, who heads the RGA and is a potential opponent during the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, indicating that Christie's presence in Wisconsin was not wanted.

However, shortly after grumbling about how he could use some financial backing during the final week of his campaign, the boyish governor told reporters he was not referring to the RGA when he talked about national spending groups not pitching into his race.

While he reiterated Burke is still outspending her -- the Democrat challenger has reportedly channeled millions from her own pockets to her gubernatorial bid -- he hardly blamed it on his party.

He pointed to the Democrats mounting an aggressive campaign against him in the last two years, claiming that he has been their "No. 1 target," Politico quoted the governor as saying.

On Monday afternoon, the former Milwaukee County executive told reporters Gov. Christie is his "good friend" and that he has nothing but utmost respect for the governors' association Christie represents.

Despite their competing political interests on the 2016 presidential race, Christie hit the campaign trail for Walker-part of his job as the head of RGA to shore up electoral support for his fellow Republicans.

RGA communications director Gail Gitcho confirmed Monday that the national committee is fully supportive of Walker's gubernatorial campaign.

Politico reported that the RGA is slating US$8 million for Walker's gubernatorial homestretch, with plans to spend at least US$2 million during the closing days of the midterm elections.

In his Politico interview, Gitcho said the RGA is all-in on Walker's second bid for Wisconsin's governorship. He praised Walker as an excellent governor and said the committee will "help him get across the finish line."
