T-Mobile Continues U.S. Growth With 2.3 Million New Subscribers

(Photo : Reuters) T-Mobile has once again reported large growth in their US business, with 2.3 million new subscribers.

T-Mobile decided to announce the fiscal results for the third quarter well into the night, after investors and the stock market went offline.

The news was mostly positive for T-Mobile - the Deutsche Telekom-owned U.S. carrier has announced 2.3 million new subscribers - 1.4 million post-paid. The carrier also announced the average payment per person had increased slightly, though T-Mobile is still behind other carriers.

The 2.3 million new subscribers out paces AT&T and Verizon Wireless, who have 2 million and 1.5 million this year, respectively. Sprint has not managed gain new subscribers, and can be firmly placed in the fourth category, with T-Mobile surging ahead.

T-Mobile claims its success is due to easier and cheaper plans, with the Un-Carrier promotional campaign working. This is its biggest season, now that T-Mobile has a stake in the iPhone, bringing millions of subscribers onto the network.

Some of Apple's new incentives, like WiFi Calling and carrier swap, both work on the T-Mobile service. This might be another reason Apple fans are moving to T-Mobile, with AT&T blocking carrier swap and Verizon Wireless blocking WiFi Calling.

Even though T-Mobile's subscriber count is increasing, their actual profit has decreased. This is in part due to T-Mobile spending more on infrastructure and their heavy promotional campaigns, to pull in more customers.

It is working in the short term, but some investors want to see a more relaxed attitude from T-Mobile, in order to generate more profit. This does not seem likely to happen however, with T-Mobile looking to acquire more 600MHz spectrum in the upcoming 2016 sale.
